Volume:
● The value and volume of international trade continues to increase.
● Most of world merchandise trade is composed of trade in manufactured goods. The
dominance of manufactured goods in the trade of merchandise has persisted over time and
will likely continue to do so.
● The level of world output in any given year influences the level of international trade in
that year.
Trade Interdependence:
● Trade between most nations is characterized by a degree of interdependency.
● Trade dependency has been a blessing for many Central and Eastern European nations.
● The dangers of trade dependency become apparent when a nation experiences economic
recession or political turmoil, which then harms dependent nations.
5.2 Mercantilism
● (chủ nghĩa trọng thương) Is the trade theory that national should accumulate financial
wealth, usually in the form of gold, by encouraging exports and discouraging imports.
Flaws of Mercantilism: (Những sai sót của chủ nghĩa trọng thương)
● World trade is a zero-sum game ( Mercantilist nations believed that the world’s wealth was
limited and that a nation could increase its share of the pie only at the expense of its
neighbors—a situation called a zero-sum game. )
● Restrict international trade
● Limit colonies’market potential
Riceland 1 5
Tealand 6 3
Another way of stating each national’s efficiency in the production of Rice and Tea
In Riceland, 1 units of resource = 1 ton of rice or ⅕ ton of tea
In Tealand, 1 units of resource = ⅙ ton of rice or ⅓ ton of tea
Political Movies
➔ Government officials often make trade-related decisions based on political motives
because a politician’s career can depend on pleasing voters and getting reelected.
➔ The main political motives behind government intervention in trade include: protecting
jobs, preserving national security, responding to other nations’ unfair trade practices,
and gaining influence over other nations.
- Protect job:
● Short of an unpopular war, nothing will oust a government faster than high rates of
unemployment. Thus, practically all governments become involved when free trade creates
job losses at home.
● Political efforts to protect jobs can draw attention away from free trade’s real benefits.
- Preserve national security: Human, economic, and environmental security are closely
related to national security. The globalization of markets and production creates new
security risks for companies.
Gain influence
● Governments of the world’s largest nations may become involved in trade to gain
influence over smaller nations.
- Economic Movies:
Protect infant industries: (bảo vệ ngành công nghiệp non trẻ) According to the infant
industry argument, a country’s emerging industries need protection from international
competition during their development phase until they become sufficiently competitive
internationally.
=> Drawbacks:
1. it requires governments to distinguish between industries that are worth protecting
and those that are not.
2. protection from international competition can cause domestic companies to become
complacent toward innovation.
3. protection can do more economic harm than good.
4. the infant industry argument also says that it is not always possible for small,
promising companies to obtain funding in capital markets.
Cultural Movies:
Achieve cultural objectives
Protection of national identify
● First, it may wish to maintain adequate supplies of a product in the home market. This
motive is most common among countries that export natural resources that are essential to
domestic business or the long-term survival of a nation.
● Second, a country may limit the export of a good in order to restrict its supply on world
markets, thereby increasing the international price of the good. This is the motive behind
the formation and activities of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC)
TARIFF-QUOTAS
A hybrid form of trade restriction is called a tariff-quota—a lower tariff rate
for a certain quantity of imports and a higher rate for quantities that exceed the
quota.
Administrative Delays
Is regulatory controls or bureaucratic rules designed to impair the flow of imports into a
country.
The objectives is to discriminate against imported products (phân biệt đối xử với các sản
phẩm nhập khẩu) - protectionism.
Currency Controls
● Restrictions on the convertibility of a currency into other currencies are called currency
controls.
● Another way governments apply currency controls to reduce imports is by stipulating
an exchange rate that is unfavorable to potential importers.
- Agreement on Service
The General Agreement on Trade in Services - GATS created during the Uruguay Round
identifies four different forms that international trade in services can take:
1. Cross-border supply: Services supplied from one country to another (for example,
international telephone calls).
2. Consumption abroad: Consumers or companies using a service while in another country
(for example, tourism).
3. Commercial presence: A company establishing a subsidiary in another country in order
to provide a service (for example, banking operations).
4. Presence of natural persons: Individuals traveling to another country in order to supply a
service (for example, business consultants).
Eclectic Theory
● The eclectic theory states that firms undertake FDI when the features of a particular
location combine with ownership and internalization advantages to make a location
appealing for investment.
● A location advantage is the advantage of locating a particular economic activity in a
specific location because of the characteristics (natural or acquired) of that location.
● An ownership advantage refers to company ownership of some special asset, such as
brand recognition, technical knowledge, or management ability.
● An internalization advantage is one that arises from internalizing a business activity
rather than leaving it to a relatively inefficient market.
Market Power
● The market power theory states that a firm tries to establish a dominant market presence
in an industry by undertaking FDI.
● vertical integration is the extension of company activities into stages of production that
provide a firm’s inputs (backward integration) or that absorb its output (forward
integration).
● CONTROL
- Partnership requirements
● Many companies have strict policies regarding how much ownership they take in
firms abroad because of the importance of maintaining control.
● PRODUCTION COSTS
- Rationalized production : (Sản xuất hợp lý hóa)—a system of production in which
each of a product’s components is produced where the cost of producing that component
is lowest.
- Mexico’s Maquiladora: Stretching 2,000 miles from the Pacific Ocean to the Gulf of
Mexico lies a 130-mile-wide strip along the US–Mexican border that comprises a special
economic region. The region’s economy encompasses 11 million people and $150 billion
in output.
- Cost of research and development: As technology becomes an increasingly powerful
competitive factor, the soaring cost of developing subsequent stages of technology has
led multinational corporations to engage in cross-border alliances and acquisitions.
● CUSTOMER KNOWLEDGE
- The behavior of buyers is frequently an important issue in the decision of whether to
undertake FDI. A local presence can help companies gain valuable knowledge about
customers that could not be obtained from the home market.
- Some countries have quality reputations in certain product categories.
● FOLLOWING CLIENTS
- Firms commonly engage in FDI when the firms they supply have already invested
abroad. This practice of “following clients” is common in industries in which producers
source component parts from suppliers with whom they have close working
relationships.
- With firms working closely together to deliver a product on a global basis, they get to
know one another rather well. And the movement toward making business activities
more environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable means that companies
sometimes pressure their suppliers and their clients to “green” their activities.
● FOLLOWING RIVALS
- FDI decisions frequently resemble a “follow the leader” scenario in industries that have a
limited number of large firms. In other words, many of these firms believe that choosing
not to make a move parallel to that of the “first mover” might result in being shut out of a
potentially lucrative market.
BALANCE OF PAYMENTPAYMENT
● Current Account
- National account that records that transactions involving the export and import of goods
and services, income receipts on assets abroad, and income payments on foreign assets
inside the country.
● Capital Account
- National account that records transactions involving the purchase and saleof assets.

● Economic integration whereby countries remove all barriers to trade among themselves
and set a common trade policy against non members is called a customs union.
COMMON MARKET
● Economic integration whereby countries remove all barriers to trade and to the
movement of labor and capital among themselves and set a common trade policy
against nonmembers is called a common market.
● Thus, a common market integrates the elements of free trade areas and customs unions and
adds the free movement of important factors of production—people and cross-border
investment.
ECONOMIC UNION
● Economic integration whereby countries remove barriers to trade and the movement of
labor and capital among members, set a common trade policy against nonmembers, and
coordinate their economic policies is called an economic union.
● An economic union goes beyond the demands of a common market by requiring member
nations to harmonize their tax, monetary, and fiscal policies and to create a common
currency.
POLITICAL UNION
● Economic and political integration whereby countries coordinate aspects of their economic
and political systems is called a political union.
● Requires members to coordinate their economic and political policies against
nonmembers, with a few exceptions
EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUMITIES
● Regional integration can expand employment opportunities by enabling people to move
from one country to another to find work or, simply, to earn a higher wage.
CORPORATE SAVINGS
● Companies that do business throughout this region could save millions of dollars annually
from the removal of import tariffs under an eventual agreement. Multinational
corporations could also save money by supplying entire regions from just a few regional
factories, rather than having a factory in each nation. Savings can then be passed on to
consumers in the form of lower prices.

legislation proposed by the European Commission. It exercises political supervision over
all EU institutions - giving it the power to supervise commissioner appointments and to
censure the commission. It also has veto power over some laws
