At the same time, the broader strata of society and especially the intelligentsia
became the source of the social movement unleashed by the changes of 1860-1890.
Faced with the passivity of the government, the intelligentsia gradually began to
move from simply putting forward proposals to self-organization and efforts to
mobilize society in order to implement those proposals, resorting to revolutionary
steps if necessary.

The peasants' anti-serfdom protests found support among the advanced various
intelligentsia, especially the youth.
Among the students of Kyiv University in 1854. the secret society "Friends of
Humanity" was born. For "Kyiv Cossacks", its members in national dress went to the
villages to raise the people to fight against | landlords The police and
gendarmes arrested the agitators.
Society was crushed.
At Kharkiv University in 1856. a secret society was also formed, the members of
which advocated
the liberation of the peasants and the overthrow of the autocracy. 1858
part of its members transferred to study at the Kyiv University, but kept ties
with those who remained in Kharkiv. Students illegally published handwritten
magazines "Glasnost" (in Kyiv), "Svobodnoe slovo" (in Kharkiv), etc., organized
Sunday schools for the illiterate population, where they promoted their ideas. For
these schools, P. Zavadsky compiled a Ukrainian primer. It was printed in Kharkiv.
In January 1860 most of the members of the society were arrested and sentenced to
exile. 1863 it ceased to exist.
