CHAPTER 7 REGIONS AND REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Introduction :
A boundary separates one region from another. Regions can be small or large. Characteristics of climate,
soil, vegetation and other wildlife contribute to zoning an area.
For example: Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra are two separate states. Since they have their own boundaries and
separate administrations and Pune and Ahmednagar are two different districts, they are considered as two separate
regions.
A functional region may exhibit a combination of many natural, economic, social and cultural factors.
The boundaries of a functional region are also flexible and change over time.
formal region :
A formal region is a geographical region with common characteristics determined on the basis of certain factors.
A formal territory consists of one dominant element and this element determines the definite boundary of that
territory.
Natural factors such as similar altitude, similar landforms, similar climatic factors, economic factors such as similar
crop regions, similar activities, or cultural factors such as common language define a formal region.
1. Natural factors : There is no single parameter of regional development. Fine cannot be used as the only measure
to develop a region. Regional development is mainly influenced by four major factors namely natural factors,
population factors, land use and economic activities carried out there.
Various natural factors affect the development of a region such as the location of the region, climate, natural
structure, altitude, soil water availability, proximity to the sea, possibility of natural harbors.
2. Factors about population structure : Demographic qualitative factors such as population, population density and
structure, birth rate, death rate, occupation structure, fertility, standard of living, life expectancy, purchasing power,
poverty rate, education rate affect the development of the region.
3. Land Use: Land use is a changing process as economic development increases, the pattern of land use in a region
changes. In rural areas, land under agriculture is more, while in urban areas, land is used more for residential areas,
businesses, transport industries.
4. Economic activity : Regions where primary occupations are high and most of the population is engaged in primary
occupations are lagging behind in development, but as the level of development increases, the theory of population
and occupations changes and the pattern of deficit occupations in the region changes and the proportion of
population engaged in tertiary occupations also increases. Thus various factors affect regional development.
Geographical Reasons: Disparity in geographic factors such as location, elevation, availability of resources, access to
transportation, climate, etc.
Human Factors: Disparities in Skilled and Unskilled Labour, Technology, Transport Markets, Communications, Banks,
Insurance Investments, Infrastructure
3) Due to the above two major reasons, development is stunted in some regions as one factor is favorable but other
factors are unfavorable. For example, many states in the North East are rich in forest resources but mineral wealth
and other geographical factors are unfavorable. Certain regions of India are backward compared to Uttar Pradesh
due to various reasons like regular cyclones or natural calamities occur in the state.
4) At the same time the Northern states and the North Eastern states are lagging behind due to lack of services like
skilled manpower, transport facilities, market access, banks and insurance.
