sales activity to be closely focused, leading to more sales, lower costs and higher
profitability.
The real question however is whether the customer in any one segment has
the same needs, attitudes, and preferences. This has led market researchers to
advocate a needs-based market segmentation approach. Roger Best, a Marketing
professor and author of business literature, proposed the seven-step approach [2].
The first step is needs-based segmentation, which means that it is needed to
group customers into segments based on similar needs and benefits in order to
solve a common consumption problem.
The second step is segment identification. For each needs-based segment, it
is determined which demographics, lifestyles, and usage behaviours make the
segment distinct and identifiable.
The third step is segment attractiveness. Using predetermined segment
attractiveness criteria (such as market growth, competitive intensity, and market
access), the overall attractiveness of each segment is determined.
The following step is to calculate the segment profitability.
After that it is essential to implement segment positioning. For each
segment, a product-price positioning strategy is created based on that segment’s
unique customer needs and characteristics.
The sixth step is segment «acid test», which requires a «segment
storyboard» to test the attractiveness of each positioning strategy.
And the final step is the adaption of a specific marketing-mix strategy.
Market segmentation methods are divided into two groups, depending on
market type, business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-consumer (B2C) [4].
For B2B market segmentation, markets are typically segmented into the 5
following variable groups:
1. Demographics;
2. Operating variables;
3. Purchasing approaches;
4. Situational factors;
27
5. Personal characteristics.
For B2C market segmentation, the common method used is consumer
typology. This is the process of segmenting consumers into 5 main categories
based on the following:
1. Geographic;
2. Geodemographic;
3. Demographic;
4. Behaviour in the product field;
5. Motivation, psychographics and social value groups.
The efficiency of accurate market segmentation can be observed on the
practice of many transnational companies. A powerful example of the impact of
market segmentation on company revenue is the experience of Canon [2]. The
quick rise of smartphone cameras was eclipsing the development of the digital
camera market. The kids segment was an underdeveloped market. Canon was
trying to extend its target segment from parents-to-be to parents with kids,
targeting mainly 5-9 years old and their parents. Conducting market research and
targeting the correct segment the company was able to pull additional 3,559
(+64.3% ) new visitors and additional 1,976 (+35.7%) returning visitors to their
website. In total, the site recorded 5,535 visitors per month and over 180 visitors
per day. The campaign gained +40% market share compared to the previous year.
All in all, market segmentation is now acknowledged as a vital factor that
paves the way for market penetration. As it allows businesses to identify the
consumer pulse and helps them in developing a profound understanding of their
consumers’ needs it serves as an essential factor that leads to market penetration.
Market segmentation makes planning campaigns easier, as it helps to focus
the company on certain customer groups instead of targeting the mass market.
Segmentation also helps marketers to be more efficient in terms of time,
money and other resources. Market segmentation allows companies to learn about
their customers. They gain a better understanding of customer’s needs and wants
28
and therefore can tailor campaigns to customer segments most likely to purchase
products.
