Apollo 13 – a happy ending!
ст
You probably know about Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin
ди
на
– the first men on the Moon. They landed there in the
spacecraft Apollo 11 on July 20, 1969. 600 million people
щ

watched them! But did you know that other Apollo missions
мо

went to the Moon? In fact, Apollo 13 was nearly a disaster.

по

Apollo 13 left Florida, USA on April 11, 1970. It had two parts
– the Command Module and the Lunar Module. There were
в

three astronauts – Jim Lovell, Fred Haise and Jack Swigert.

т“
ле

One man, Ken Mattingly, didn’t go because he was ill.

After two days, on April 13, there was an explosion. It
„К

damaged the Command Module. The astronauts were in

на

danger. They told Mission Control, ‘We have a problem

here.’ There was only enough air for 15 minutes! So they
ие

moved to the Lunar Module.

ан

In the Lunar Module there wasn’t much power, food, water

д

or air. They couldn’t breathe, because the air was bad. But
из

they repaired the oxygen container with a plastic bag and a

но

sock! They could breathe again.

Now they had one big problem. They were 321,800
ал

kilometres from Earth and they didn’t have enough power

ци

to get back. Mission Control decided to send the astronauts

пе

towards the Moon. Then gravity could pull the spacecraft

С

back to Earth without power.

It was a race against time. Back on Earth Ken Mattingly
saved his friends’ lives, too. The astronauts couldn’t use
their computers so Ken guided them to Earth. It was very
dangerous. But they landed in the Pacific Ocean on April 17
at 1:07 pm. The men were alive – and heroes!

by Leon Jackson

то
What do you think of when you see the word ‘hero’? Do you think of

но
superheroes such as Spider-Man or Superman? Or perhaps you think of famous

он
people from the past like Florence Nightingale or Princess Diana. A hero

ци
usually helps people. Or he or she does something good for a community. For
example, Spider-Man fights crime. And Florence Nightingale saved the lives of

ан
lots of people in hospitals in the nineteenth century.

ст
Unfortunately, for lots of people today, their heroes are celebrities. These

ди
celebrities are famous because they are film stars or pop stars, or just because
they are beautiful and appear on TV! In my opinion, they aren’t real heroes.
на
But some celebrities can be heroes and good role models. For example, David
щ

Beckham is a famous footballer and Shakira is a singer. But they both do work
мо

for UNICEF, an international charity that helps children. Beckham also started
a charity that gives wheelchairs to children. Shakira started a charity that
по

provides special schools for poor children in Colombia. Their work improves the
lives of many children all over the world.
