*Roles: set of expected behavior patterns attributed to someone occupying a given position in
a social unit
Role Identity: Certain attitudes and behaviors consistent with a role (các hành động và
Role Perception: An individual’s view of how he or she is supposed to act in a given
Role Expectations: How others believe a person should act in a given situation (người
Role Conflict: A situation in which an individual is confronted by divergent role
*NORMS: Acceptable standards of behavior within a group that are shared by the group’s members
– Performance norms - level of acceptable work
– Appearance norms - what to wear
– Social arrangement norms - friendships and the like
– Allocation of resources norms - distribution and assignments of jobs and material
Research of Hawthorne Studies Conclusions ***
• Worker behavior and sentiments were closely related. (hành vi và tình cảm của workers
liên hệ chặt chẽ với nhau )
• Group influences (norms) were significant in affecting individual behavior.
• Group standards (norms) were highly effective in establishing individual worker
output.
• Money was less a factor in determining worker output than were group standards,
sentiments, and security.
Conformity (sự tuân thủ)
– Gaining acceptance by adjusting one’s behavior to align with the norms of the group
Trinh Ngoc Nhan BABAWE19282
• Reference Groups
– Important groups to which individuals belong or hope to belong and with whose norms individuals are likely to
• Asch Studies
– Demonstrated the power of conformance (sức mạnh của sự tuân thủ)
– Culture-based and declining in importance
• Deviant Workplace Behavior (hành vi sai lệch nơi làm việc) ***
– Also called antisocial behavior or workplace incivility
– Voluntary behavior that violates significant organizational norms and, in doing so, threatens the well-being of
the organization
– Typology:
• Production – working speed
• Property – damage and stealing
• Political – favoritism and gossip
• Personal Aggression – sexual harassment
Group Influence on Deviant Behavior ( ảnh hưởng của group đến hành vi sai lệch ) ***
– Group norms can influence the presence of deviant behavior
– Simply belonging to a group increases the likelihood of deviance
– Being in a group allows individuals to hide – creates a false sense of confidence that they won’t be caught
• *STATUS: A socially defined position or rank given to groups or group members by others – it
differentiates group members.
Status Characteristics Theory stated that status derived from one of three
sources:
Power a person has over others
Ability to contribute to groupgoals
Personal characteristics
Status Effects ***
• On Norms and Conformity (sự phù hợp)
– High-status members are less restrained (hạn chế) by norms and pressure to conform
– Some level of deviance is allowed to high-status members so long as it doesn’t affect group goal achievement
• On Group Interaction
– High-status members are more assertive (quả quyết)
Trinh Ngoc Nhan BABAWE19282
– Large status differences limit diversity of ideas and creativity
• On Equity
– If status is perceived to be inequitable (bất bình đẳng), it will result in various forms of corrective behavior.

• Group Strengths:
– Generate more complete information and knowledge
– Offer increased diversity of views and greater creativity
– Increased acceptance of decisions
– Generally more accurate (but not as accurate as the most accurate group member)
• Group Weaknesses:
– Time-consuming activity
– Conformity pressures in the group
– Discussions can be dominated by a few members
– A situation of ambiguous s (ko rõ ràng) responsibility
Trinh Ngoc Nhan BABAWE19282
2. WORK TEAM
Differences between Groups and Teams
• Work Group
– A group that interacts primarily to share information and to make decisions to
help each group member perform within his or her area of responsibility
– No joint effort required
• Work Team
– Generates positive synergy through coordinated effort (nỗ lực phối hợp). The
individual efforts result in a performance that is greater than the sum of the
individual inputs
Synergy: sức mạnh đoàn kết

through conflict and social loafing to encourage a healthy and effective group
Teams take more time and resources than does individual work.
Three tests to see if a team fits the situation: (có nên thành lập team ko ? )
Is the work complex and is there a need for different perspectives – will it be better with the insights of
more than one person?
Does the work create a common purpose or set of goals for the group that is larger than the aggregate
of the goals for individuals?
Are members of the group involved in interdependent tasks?
• Management
– Use of authority inherent in designated formal rank to obtain compliance (sự tuân thủ)
from organizational members
– Extroversion
– Conscientiousness
– Openness

Trait theory: leadership is inherent, so we must identify the leader based on his or her traits
Behavioral theory: leadership is a skill set and can be taught to anyone, so we must identify
the proper behaviors to teach potential leaders
While trait and behavior theories do help
us understand leadership, an important component is missing: the environment in which the leader exists.
Contingency Theory adds this additional aspect to our understanding leadership effectiveness studies
a) Fiedler’s Model: Effective group performance depends on the proper match between
leadership style and the degree to which the situation gives the leader control. (việc thực

b) House Path-Goal Theory (based on the Vroom and Yetton’s Leader-Participation Model)
Provide followers with information, support, and resources to help them achieve their goals
Clarify the “path” to the worker’s goals
Leaders can display multiple leadership types
Four types of leaders:
– Directive: focuses on the work to be done
– Supportive: focuses on the well-being of the worker
– Participative: consults (tham khảo) with employees in decision making
– Achievement-Oriented: sets challenging goals

POWER TACTICS
Trinh Ngoc Nhan BABAWE19282
POWER POLITICS
Trinh Ngoc Nhan BABAWE19282
In business, Politics mean some sort of activities where a person goes after a goal or something
that they want that is focused on their particular interests. Political Behavior is defined as
activities that are not required as part of the job, but that impacts the way benefits and
punishments are distributed within the organization. Political behavior can take the form of
legitimate or illegitimate behavior.
Legitimate political behavior is everyday normal politics such as complaining, bypassing, or
obstructing. For example, you might need a certain machine, which is in hand of another
department of company to get your work done. You might talk to your supervisor about how you
Trinh Ngoc Nhan BABAWE19282
need a machine like that or persuade that you must use that machine more than that department.
Instead of saying “I want that machine”, you said “It’d be nice to have a machine like that”. Days
by days, the managers will give you that machine!!!
Illegitimate political behavior is more extreme and violates the implied rules of the game such
as sabotage(phá hoại), whistle blowing, and symbolic protest(biểu tình phản đối), which
includes things such as wearing protest buttons or calling in sick as a group. For example, instead
of asking for help during the worktime (as a conflict happen), you try to bias your managers with
other newbies, try to destroy the company’s rules for accomplish your purpose.
The reality of Politics
Politics often occurs when resources are low – the excess demand for the resources leads to
competition and political behaviors. There will be varying views regarding how “fairly” or
“effectively” the distribution was done. Perceptions can be distorted (bóp méo) such that the
manager feels they are documenting decisions and the employee just feels that the manager is
covering his/her rear. Most of the time, managers are making decisions under ambiguous
conditions and there is not a readily available objective standard. This creates a context in which
political behaviors is encouraged.
There are a number of factors that influence political behavior. These factors include individual
factors and organizational factors. The combination of these factors will lead to political
behavior which can lead to favorable outcomes such as increased rewards or decreased
punishments.
Most employees will not engage in a high level of politics and often react negatively to
politics. Their reactions include decreased job satisfaction, increased anxiety and stress,
increased turnover, and a reduction in performance. Even though the given outcome for the
individual employee who engages in politics may be favorable, it is often a negative impact for
Trinh Ngoc Nhan BABAWE19282
the group as a whole. When people perceive politics as a threat rather than as an opportunity,
they often respond
Trinh Ngoc Nhan BABAWE19282
Impression Management: The process by which individuals attempt to control the impression
others form of them. This is very important, especially when we go to an interview or evaluate
any performance (intrinsic as well as extrinsic) (cơ bản là làm sao quản lý, giữ gìn được hình
– Conformity: Agreeing with someone else’s opinion in order to gain his or her approval (đồng ý
– Excuses: Explanations of a predicament-creating event aimed at minimizing the apparent severity
of the predicament. (giải thích, bào chữa về tịnh trạng khó khăn để giảm thiểu mức độ nghiêm
trọng của nó)
– Apologies: Admitting responsibility for an undesirable event and simultaneously seeking to get a
pardon for the action (thừa nhận trách nhiệm về sự kiện không mong muốn xảy ra đồng thời tìm
cách giải quyết)
– Self-Promotion: Highlighting one’s best qualities, downplaying one’s deficits, and calling
attention to one’s achievements. (làm nổi bật phẩm chất, lu mờ sự thiếu sót và gây sự chú ý đến
thành tích)
– Flattery: Complimenting others about their virtues in an effort to make oneself appear perceptive and likable.
– Favors: Doing something nice for someone to gain that person’s approval (làm điều gì tốt đẹp để
ai đó chấp thuận).
– Association: Enhancing or protecting one’s image by managing information about people and
things with which one is associated.
CONFLICT PROCESS
Trinh Ngoc Nhan BABAWE19282
Stage 1: 3 main condition that can cause conflict to arise (sự đối lập tiềm ẩn or ko ưa thích)
+ Communication: words mean different things to different people and misunderstandings
result. When too much communication is given, it can cause frustrations.
+ Structure: confused about their roles or the amount of authority they have => raise
conflict (Ex: goals are not well-defined, not suitable leadership styles, …)
+ Personal variables: different value systems represented and personality types are at odds =>
raise conflict
Stage 2: 2 main reasons
+ Perceived Conflict (xung đột nhận thức): Awareness by one or more parties of the existence
of conditions that create opportunities for conflict to arise
+ Felt Conflict( xung đột cảm xúc) : Emotional involvement in a conflict creating anxiety,
tenseness, frustration, or hostility
Stage 3: INTENTION is
Trinh Ngoc Nhan BABAWE19282
Trinh Ngoc Nhan BABAWE19282
Stage 4: BEHAVIOR
Conflict management: is using behavior such as resolution and stimulation techniques to
manage how much conflict is present.
The conflict-intensity continuum shows the escalation of conflict from zero conflict to another
conflict (ăn miếng trả miếng)
Stage 5: OUTCOMES
Functional Conflict Dysfunctional Conflict
-Increased group performance -Development of discontent (bất mãn)
-Improved quality of decisions -Reduced group effectiveness
-Stimulation (thúc đẩy) of creativity and -Retarded (ít phát triển) communication
innovation -Reduced group cohesiveness (sự gắn kết)
-Encouragement of interest and curiosity (sự -Infighting among group members overcomes
tò mò) group goals
-Provision of a medium for problem solving
-Creation of an environment for self-
evaluation and change
NEGOTIATION (bargaining)
Definition: A process in which two or more parties exchange goods or services and attempt
to agree on the exchange rate for them
Two General Approaches:
– Distributive Bargaining (thương lượng phân phối): Negotiation that seeks to
divide up a fixed amount of resources; a win-lose situation (kiểu 1 bên lời
hơn)
Trinh Ngoc Nhan BABAWE19282
– Integrative Bargaining(thương lượng hợp nhất) : Negotiation that seeks one
or more settlements that can create a win-win solution (2 bên cùng có lợi)
BATNA
– The Best Alternative To a Negotiated Agreement
– The lowest acceptable value (outcome) to an individual for a negotiated agreement
Trinh Ngoc Nhan BABAWE19282
a. High formalization
+ Minimum worker discretion (tuỳ ý) in how to get the job done
+ Many rules and procedures to follow
b. Low formalization
+ Job behaviors are nonprogrammed
+ Employees have maximum discretion
COMMON ORGANIZATIONAL DESIGN
Simple Structure
-Matrix: A structure that creates dual lines of authority and combines functional and
product departmentalization (kết hợp giữa bộ phận chức năng và sản phẩm)
Gains the advantages of functional and product departmentalization while avoiding their
weaknesses
Facilitates coordination of complex and interdependent activities
Breaks down unity-of-command (cấp dưới chịu trách nhiệm trực tiếp) concept
A small, core organization that outsources its major business functions
Highly centralized with little or no departmentalization
• Provides maximum flexibility while concentrating on what the organization does
best
• Reduced control over key parts of the business
Boundaryless organization: eliminate the chain of command, have limitless spans of control,
and replace departments with empowered teams (kiểm soát vô hạn)
+ Eliminate vertical (hierarchical) and horizontal (departmental) internal boundaries
+ Breakdown external barriers to customers and suppliers
1. Innovation and risk taking (Tổ chức khuyến khích employee sáng tạo thậm chí mạo hiểm)
Companies with cultures that place a high value on innovation encourage their employees to take risks and innovate
in the performance of their jobs.
Companies with cultures that place a low value on innovation expect their employees to do their jobs the same way they
have been trained, without looking for ways to improve their performance.
This characteristic of organizational culture dictates the degree to which employees are expected to be accurate in their
work.
A culture that places a high value on attention to detail expects its employees to perform their work with precision (sự
chính xác), and a culture that places a low value on this characteristic does not.
Companies that focus on results but not on how the results are achieved emphasize this value of organizational culture.
A company that instructs its sales force to do whatever it takes to get sales orders has a culture that places a high value
on the emphasis on outcome characteristics.
4. People orientation (quan tâm đến yếu tố con người kiểu như treat employee well)
Companies that place a high value on this characteristic of organizational culture place great importance on how their
decisions will affect the people in their organizations.
For these companies, it is important to treat their employees with respect and dignity.’
Trinh Ngoc Nhan BABAWE19282
Companies that organize work activities around teams instead of individuals place a high value on this characteristic of
the organizational culture.
People who work for these types of companies tend to have a positive relationship with their coworkers and
managers.
This characteristic of organizational culture dictates whether group members are expected to be assertive or easygoing
when dealing with companies they compete with within the marketplace.
Companies with an aggressive culture place a high value on competitiveness and outperform the competition at all
costs.
A company whose culture places a high value on stability is rule-oriented, predictable, and bureaucratic in nature.
These types of companies typically provide consistent and predictable levels of output and operate best in non-
changing market conditions.
Criticisms of Spirituality
• What is the scientific foundation?
– It is still pending: needs more research
• Are spiritual organizations legitimate – do they have the right to impose values on employees?
– Spirituality is not about God or any religious values
– It is an attempt to help employees find meaning and value in their work
• Are spirituality and profits compatible?
– Initial evidence suggests that they are
– Spirituality may result in greater productivity and dramatically lower turnover
In Summary
• Organization cultures, while strong, can’t ignore local culture
• Managers should be more culturally sensitive by:
– Adjusting speech to cultural norms
– Listening more
– Avoiding discussions of controversial topics
• All global firms (not just U.S. firms) need to be more culturally sensitive
