So, let's start to read!
sportsmen often get cups and wreaths for winning the first place in sports
competitions.
The olympionics of ancient Greece became very popular. Best craftsmen were
chosen to make honourary cups, many poets wrote and recited in public poems about
the best athletes. Sculptors made their statues which were put up at the birthplace of
the winners.
The Olympic Games were accompanied by arts festivals. Poets recited their
poems, singers sang hymns dancers danced and orators pronounced speeches – all
this in honour of the sacred Games.
Only men could take part in the Olympic Games. Women were not allowed
even to watch the competitions at the stadium under the fear of death penalty. There
was a single exception, when a woman coached her son and accompanied him to the
stadium in men's clothes. That brave woman was spared the penalty because her son
excelled in many events.
Magnificent strong bodies inspired artists and sculptors. They painted wall
pictures and made statues of marble and bronze, so now we can admire the corporal
beauty of ancient and eternally young discus thrower, javelin bearer and others.
The Olympic Games had been held for about eleven hundred years, until the
emperor Theodosius banned them for religious reasons in 394 A. D.
The revival of the Olympic Games began long time afterwards, in 1892, when
a young French teacher Pierre de Coubertin made a public speech before the Union of
French sports clubs in Paris.
At that time many people in many countries practiced various kinds of sports
and games. They wanted to make friends and compete with sportsmen from other
lands. Pierre de Coubertin understood the importance of sports which unified peoples
of the world and served the cause of peace like in ancient time.
On the 23rd of June 1894 the International Congress of amateur sportsmen
made an important decision: to revive the Olympic Games and to establish the
International Olympic Committee which would be responsible for the administration
of the modern Olympic Games.

A Blind Love Story
I was going on my 2nd year out of high school, and I was finally becoming in
touch with who I was. I didn't date much, I hung out with guy friends but nothing
ever amounted a “boyfriend/girlfriend” relationship. I thought I was destined to be
alone. I mean I had so many guy friends, but I wanted a boyfriend. Everyone told me
I was so pretty and everything, but I didn't believe them. I used to think that I am
never going to find a boyfriend I am too fat, I am ugly, what’s wrong with me! Well I
had just started a new school (in January of 1999), lost some weight, and was
beginning to think any guy would be lucky to date with me, I am a great person. So
after a few months at my new school – no boyfriend. I once again lost hope.
Перша зупинка
Teacher: Where is the story set? Who are the main persons?
Well I was at home one day and my cousin Chris has called me and
said:“Listen there are these guys doing work at my office, there is this really cute one
named Bill he is 18 going on 19 and he is so cute… Wanna meet him?” Well I was a
little skeptical.... she said email me your picture and I will show him and ask him. So
I did uncaringly! She called me back and said that Bill wanted to meet me, so I was
like ok, well what does he look like, he knows what I look like, I want to know what
he looks like... so she said he looks like Matt Damon. I said Chris that it was
36
impossible for me go out with someone who looks like Matt Damon. I DON'T
THINK SO. So she said well and asked me to give him at least my number. I said
yes, what’s the harm in talking to him. Well he called me that night at 8:00, from that
night on every night at 8:00 Bill called me. Well, we talked from February 9th on and
we decided to meet finally on March 2nd at Friday's at 8:00 pm. Well I was a
complete nervous nearly the whole day, what was I going to wear, he knows what I
look like, I don't know what he looks like, I can't do this, etc., etc., etc. Well my
cousin picked me up at 7:30 and we went to Friday's (mind, everyone in her office
was there as well for my blind date). I walked into the restaurant looked across the
room and saw him.
Друга зупинка
Teacher: What was Matt Damon going to do? What were girl's emotions?
The most beautiful man with the most wonderful smile I have ever seen. I
walked up, introduced myself and everyone in the room disappeared. By the time I
realized what was going on, we were on our way to a dinner and soon after on our
way back to his house to watch a movie. We on March 17th we officially became a
couple... six months later, we were on our first vacation together, we have now been
together for 3 years this March, we have made it through some trials and
tribulations... we can't wait to spend the rest of our lives together... All I have to say
is Thank You Chris! You were right we are perfect together; he is my love, my heart,
my soul mate, my everything.
Третя зупинка
Teacher: What is the girl going to do? What does the girl think about Matt?

language in the world. (Добре. Тепер прочитайте текст і знайдіть факти, які
доводять, що англійська мова найпоширеніша у світі).
WHY WE LEARN ENGLISH
People began to speak many centuries ago, and since then they have been
speaking different languages. Every language reflects the soul, behaviour and
temperament of each nationality. Peoples created their own alphabets and rules, but
they always wanted to communicate with each other, to understand and to know more
about each other. Languages help people to understand each other better, they help
38
them to solve different economic and political problems, which stands before them,
and so people learn foreign languages.
All languages are different. Some are very hard, some are easier, some are
similar, but there are no identical languages in the whole world. There are more than
2 700 languages in the world. Many of them are “alive” because people use them, but
there are some “dead” languages, for example Latin.
Two thousands years ago, Latin was the world's most important international
language. Today this title belongs to English. It's a global language of travel,
business, pop culture, sport and science.
Over one billion people speak English. That's almost one fifth of the world's
population. For over 400 million it's their first language. For the other 600 million it's
either a second language or a foreign language.
Today, in fact, over 250 million people are learning English. That's more than
the population of the USA.
The average person in Britain has a vocabulary of between 10 000 and 15 000
words. In his plays William Shakespeare used a vocabulary of about 30 000 words.
Shakespeare was born over 400 years ago. At that time, only six or seven million
people spoke English.
Now English is spoken practically all over the world, it has become the world's
most important language in politics, science, trade and cultural relations. It is spoken
as a mother tongue in Great Britain, the United States of America, Canada, Australia
and New Zealand. Besides, a lot of people speak English in Japan, India, China,
Africa and many other countries. English is one of the official languages of the
United Nation Organization. Half of the world's scientific literature is in English. It is
the language of computer technology.
English is worth studying. There is a proverb: “A new language is a new
world”. “Knowledge is a power”, one great man said. Speaking a foreign language
one can not only read the papers, magazines and original books by outstanding
writers, butas well watch satellite programmes, travel easily to different parts of the

Застосування стратегії «ІДЕАЛ»

Завдання: Застосувати стратегію «ІДЕАЛ» для розвитку критичного

of ecological problems, effect of these problems on people, and ways of solutions.
(Прочитайте текст на тему «Проблеми навколишнього середовища». Знайдіть
інформацію про причини екологічних проблем, їх вплив на людей, способи

Environment Problems
Nowadays, environmental problems are the most burning for the society. Air,
water, land and nuclear pollution badly damage the nature. People cut down trees and
destroy the habitat of thousands of animals. As a result, many species are in danger of
extinction. Factories pollute our rivers and lakes with dangerous chemicals. The
increasing number of cars in towns and cities has led to the growth of harmful gases
in the atmosphere. There is much litter everywhere, our parks and forests are full of
rubbish.
Scientists believe that the problem of global warming is becoming more and
more serious. The results of human activity such as acid rains, greenhouse effect and
ozone layer destruction cause the changes of the climate on our planet and destroy it.
All these facts have a bad influence on our health. More and more people suffer from
allergies and breathing problems. It’s almost impossible to find a healthy person
nowadays.
41
People are becoming more and more aware that our planet is under threat and
it’s all our fault. Fortunately, it's not too late to solve these problems. We have the
time, the money and the technologies to take care of our planet.
There are a number of simple things we can do if we want to help our planet.
For example, if we stop wasting paper and start recycling it, we’ll save some of the
millions of trees which are cut down every year.We should also stop making
unnecessary car journeys to cut down air pollution. Governments can improve public
transport so that people could use it more often. They can also pass laws to stop
companies from destroying rainforests. We can create parks for endangered species
of animals. People should use natural resources in a rational way and look for
alternative sources of energy such as wind and solar energy. But the most important
thing we must do is to open our eyes and act immediately. The Earth is our home and
we should protect and save it for ourselves and for the future generations.
